FARGO, ND – First Step Recovery, a program of The Village Family Service Center, is now offering walk-in chemical dependency evaluations. The new service aims to reduce barriers to care by allowing individuals to receive an evaluation without an appointment.
Walk-in evaluations are available Monday through Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (last evaluation begins by 2:00 p.m.) at 2701 12th Ave S, Fargo.
“Our goal is to remove as many barriers to treatment as possible, like with our new virtual program option,” says Tonya Sorenson, Program Director at First Step Recovery. “We know that timing is everything when someone reaches out for help. Walk-in evaluations allow us to meet people where they’re at, physically and emotionally, helping them get started on a path toward healing without delay.”
A chemical dependency evaluation is a confidential meeting with a licensed addiction counselor who will assess an individual’s substance use history, physical and mental health, and readiness for treatment. The goal is to determine the most appropriate level of care and treatment plan.
Evaluations typically take 60 to 90 minutes. Individuals should bring a photo ID, an insurance card (if applicable), and any legal paperwork related to a referral (such as a DUI or court order).
Most insurance plans cover the cost of an evaluation. Those without insurance may qualify for assistance through the North Dakota Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Voucher Program, which helps eligible individuals access treatment at no cost. First Step staff can help determine eligibility.
“Many of the people we see are just trying to get answers or figure out what to do next,” says Tonya Sorenson, Program Supervisor at First Step Recovery. “We’re here to support you without judgment. Walk-in evaluations are one more way we’re making it easier for people to access the help they need when they’re ready.”
While appointments are not required during walk-in hours, clients may also choose to schedule an evaluation at a time that works for them.
After the evaluation, individuals receive a recommendation for the next steps and, if appropriate, can begin treatment without delay.
